This song was the B-side to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ single I Put A Spell On You. The single sold over a million copies but failed to make the R&B or pop charts in America. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was a pioneer of shock rock and his stage act began with him emerging from a coffin. Merseybeat group The Undertakers would dress as undertakers on stage and their amps were made to look like coffins. The Beatles played Little Demon during the Let It Be sessions in 1969.
Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ real name was Jalacy Hawkins. He wrote and recorded this song in 1956. It was released as a single with Little Demon on the B-side. The song has been covered by The Alan Price Set, The Animals, Joe Cocker, Nina Simone and Manfred Mann. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ vocal style is similar to John Lennon’s at the end of the song Cold Turkey.
