The recording features The Edwin Hawkins Singers on backing vocals. The recording was produced by Billy Preston and George Harrison. It was first released on the 1970 album Encouraging Words. My Sweet Lord was released as a single in America in 1970. The B-side was Little Girl.

The song was also recorded by George Harrison in 1970. A demo version was released in 2011 on the George Harrison: Living In The Material World soundtrack. The demo version features Ringo Starr and Klaus Voorman. The studio version was first released on the album All Things Must Pass in 1970. That version features Ringo Starr on drums, Klaus Voorman on bass and Billy Preston on piano. A live version recorded in 1971 at The Concert For Bangladesh features Ringo Starr on drums, Klaus Voorman on bass and Billy Preston on Hammond organ. That version was released on the 1971 album The Concert For Bangladesh. Billy Preston also recorded the song live with King Curtis in 1971. That version was first released in 2005 on the box-set Don’t Fight The Feeling: The Complete Aretha Franklin & King Curtis Live At Fillmore West. The song was played during a jam session for John Lennon’s birthday in 1971. The jam included John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and Phil Spector among others. Billy Preston performed the song live during George Harrison’s 1974 North American tour. A live version recorded by George Harrison in Japan in 1991 was released on the 1992 album Live In Japan. George Harrison re-recorded the song in 2000. That version features Dhani Harrison on acoustic guitar. It was released in 2001 on the remastered version of the All Things Must Pass album. Billy Preston performed the song live in 2002 at the Concert For George. He was joined on stage by Paul McCartney on piano, Ringo Starr on drums and Dhani Harrison on acoustic guitar. That version was released on the 2003 album Concert For George.

The song later became a favourite of Stella McCartney’s and it was performed live in 2014 by Dhani Harrison, dedicated to her.
