This song was written by T.J. “Red” Arnall and was based on the American folk song Little Sadie. Also known as Bad Lee Brown, it was first recorded by John Dilleshaw under that name in 1929. Cocaine Blues was first recorded by Roy Hogsed And The Rainbows Riders in 1947. Johnny Cash first recorded the song in 1960 as Transfusion Blues. He first recorded the song as Cocaine Blues in 1968. That version was recorded live at Folsom State Prison and was released in 1968 on the album At Folsom Prison. Paul McCartney owned a copy of the album and The Beatles played the song during the Let It Be sessions in 1969.
