Twist And Shout was written by Phil Medley and Bert Berns (later credited as Bert Russell). It was first recorded by The Top Notes under the title Shake It Up, Baby in 1961. The Beatles recorded the song for their 1963 album Please Please Me. The album was released in March 1963. Brian Poole And The Tremeloes recorded the song later the same year. Their version is similar to The Beatles’ version. It was produced by Mike Smith and released as a single on the Decca label in June 1963. The B-Side was We Know. Twist And Shout reached number four on the UK Singles chart. Brian Poole and The Tremeloes were signed to Decca at the same time The Beatles were rejected by them. Twist And Shout was their first hit single in the UK.
