Those Were The Days is the English version of the Russian song Dorogoi Dlinnoyu. Dorogoi Dlinnoyu was written by Boris Fomin and Konstantin Podrevsky. It was first recorded by Alexander Vertinsky in 1926. English lyrics were written by Gene Raskin. Those Were The Days was first recorded by The Limeliters in 1962. Mary Hopkin recorded the song in 1968. It was recorded at EMI Studios and was produced by Paul McCartney. The recording features Paul McCartney on acoustic guitar. Mary Hopkin also recorded vocals in German, Spanish, Italian, and French. They were later overdubbed onto the original backing track. Mary Hopkin was signed to The Beatles’ record company Apple. Those Were The Days was released as her debut single with Turn Turn Turn on the B-side. It was the second single released on the Apple label. It reached number one on the UK Singles chart and number two on the Billboard chart. John Lennon sang part of the song during the Bed-In in Amsterdam in 1969. Cynthia Lennon recorded the song in 1995. Her version was released as a single with Walking In The Rain on the B-side.
