The Inner Light was written by George Harrison in 1967. The backing track was recorded at HMV Studios in Bombay, India in 1968. An alternative instrumental take was released as a bonus track to the 2014 remastered version of George Harrison’s album Wonderwall Music. Although George Harrison does not perform on the backing track he can be heard at the beginning giving direction. The Beatles vocals were recorded at EMI Studios in London and the recording was produced by George Martin. The recording does not feature Ringo Starr. The Inner Light was first released as the B-side to Lady Madonna in 1968. The single reached number four on the Billboard chart and number one on the UK singles chart. The single was also released in India. A new remix was released on The Beatles’ 2006 album Love. It was part of a medley along with Here Comes The Sun.
The Inner Light was performed by Jeff Lynne during The Concert For George in 2002. That version was released in 2003 on the album Concert For George. The recording features Ravi Shankar’s daughter, Anoushka Shankar, on sitar and George Harrison’s son, Dhani Harrison, on piano and backing vocals. The song has also been recorded by Jimmy McGriff & Junior Parker among others.
