This song was written by Wes Farrell and Bert Russell in 1964 and was originally called My Girl Sloopy. It was first recorded as My Girl Sloopy by The Vibrations in 1964. It was recorded as Hang On Sloopy by The McCoys in 1965 with Rick Derringer on lead vocals. It was released as a single with I Can’t Explain It on the B-side. The single reached number one on the Billboard chart and number five on the UK Singles chart. The song was performed by Rick Derringer while with Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band. The song has also been recorded by The Yardbirds, The Supremes, The Kingsmen, and Count Basie among others.
