Also known as The Hammer Song, this song was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays in 1949. It was first recorded by The Weavers in 1949. Since then it had been recorded by Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul and Mary, and The Seekers among others. Trini Lopez covered the song in 1963. It was released as a single with Unchain My Heart on the B-side. It went to number three on the Billboard chart and number four on the UK Singles chart. Trini Lopez supported The Beatles when they played in Paris in 1964. This was his biggest hit at the time. If I Had A Hammer influenced the melody of Paul McCartney’s 2001 song Freedom.
