Phil Medley and Bert Berns (later credited as Bert Russell) wrote this song in 1961. It was first recorded by The Top Notes and was originally titled Shake It Up, Baby. It was recorded by The Isley Brothers in 1962. The song was part of The Beatles’ repertoire and a live version was recorded in 1962. It was released in 1977 on the album Live! At The Star-Club In Hamburg, Germany; 1962. The Beatles recorded the song in 1963 for their album Please Please Me. It was recorded at EMI Studios and produced by George Martin. It was also released as a single in America in 1964. It reached number two on the Billboard chart. The B-Side was There’s A Place. A live version recorded in 1963 at the Royal Variety Performance was released in 1995 on the album Anthology 1. A excerpt recorded in 1964 at The Hollywood Bowl wads used on the 1964 album The Beatles’ Story. Another live version recorded at The Hollywood Bowl in 1965 was released on the 1977 album The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl. The Beatles also recorded the song for BBC Radio and one version was released on the album On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2 in 2013. Another BBC version was released on the 2013 album The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963. They also played the song during the Let It Be sessions in 1969.

John Lennon played the song during a jam session for his birthday in 1971 along with Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono, Phil Spector and Klaus Voormann among others. Twist And Shout was performed by Taj Mahal and The Graffiti Band in 1987. The band included George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and John Fogerty among other. Taj Mahal and John Fogerty shared the lead vocal. George Harrison and Ringo Starr performed the song live in 1988 at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. They were joined on stage by Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Elton John among others. George shared the lead vocals with Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. The song has also been recorded by Brian Poole and The Tremeloes, The Miracles, The Kingsmen, Tina Turners, The Mamas And The Papas, and The Searchers among others.
