This song was written in 1961 by Phil Medley and Bert Berns (later credited as Bert Russell). It was originally titled Shake It Up, Baby and was first recorded by The Top Notes. Their version was produced by Phil Spector. The song was covered by The Isley Brothers in 1962. Their version was released as a single with Spanish Twist on the B-side. It reached number seventeen on the Billboard chart and number two on the R&B chart. In the UK it reached number forty-two on the Singles chart.

The song became part of The Beatles’ repertoire and was sung by John. A live version recorded in 1962 was released in 1977 on the album Live! At The Star-Club In Hamburg, Germany; 1962. A live version recorded in 1963 was released on the album Anthology 1 in 1995. Another live version recorded in 1965 was released on the 1977 album The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl. They also recorded the song for BBC radio and one version was released in 2013 on the album On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2. A second BBC version was released on the album The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 in 2013.

The Beatles recorded the song in 1963 for their début album Please Please Me. They also played the song during the Let It Be sessions in 1969. The Beatles took their famous ‘whoo’ from Twist And Shout and used it in many of their early songs including I Saw Her Standing There, From Me To You, and She Loves You. The song has also been recorded by Brian Poole and The Tremeloes, The Miracles, The Kingsmen, Tina Turners, and The Mamas And The Papas. Merseybeat group The Searchers recorded the song in 1963 and released it on their album Meet The Searchers.

The Isley Brothers’ version was on John Lennon’s 1965 jukebox. He played the song during a jam session for his birthday in 1971. The jam included Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono, Phil Spector and Klaus Voormann among others. Twist And Shout was performed by Taj Mahal and The Graffiti Band in 1987. The band included George Harrison, Bob Dylan and John Fogerty among other. Taj Mahal and John Fogerty shared the lead vocal. George Harrison and Ringo Starr performed the song live in 1988 at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. They were joined on stage by Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Elton John among others. George shared the lead vocals with Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
