TAMI-James-Brown

James Brown.

This instrumental was recorded by James Brown and his band in 1959. It was released as a single, in two parts, in 1960. For contractual reasons it was released under the name Nat Kendrick and The Swans. Radio DJ Carton “King” Coleman overdubbed lead vocals onto the recording but James Brown’s vocals can still be heard. The single reached number eight in the R&B chart. James Brown recorded Mashed Potatoes U.S.A in 1962. (Do The) Mashed Potatoes was part of the repertoire of  Merseybeat group The Undertakers. They covered the song in 1963. They released it as the B-side to their first single, Everybody Loves A Lover. The Searchers released a live version in 1963 on their album “Sweets For My Sweet” – The Searchers At The Star-Club Hamburg. The song has also been covered by The Kingsmen.
