Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote this song in 1958 and it was first recorded by The Coasters. It was released as a single with Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart on the B-side. It reached number one on both the R&B chart and the Billboard chart. Paul McCartney owned a copy of the single and it became part of The Quarrymen’s repertoire. It was also part of The Beatles’ repertoire and was sung together by John and George.
The song was covered by Merseybeat group The Fourmost in 1965. It was released on their album First And Fourmost. The Coasters recorded a number of songs The Beatles liked and recorded including Young Blood, Searchin’ and Besame Mucho. The Beatles saw The Coasters perform live when they were in Miami in 1964.
