This song was written by Milton Ager and Jack Yellen in 1927. It was first recorded by Ben Bernie and his Orchestra and became a Tin Pan Alley standard. It has also been recorded by Gene Austin, Big Joe Turner and Liverpudlian singer Michael Holliday. It was covered by Gene Vincent in 1956 and it was this version that The Beatles would have known. It became part of their repertoire and was sung by John. They recorded a version in Hamburg, Germany in 1961 for Polydor Records. It was released as a single in 1964. The Beatles recorded a version during the Abbey Road sessions in 1969. It was released on the album Anthology 3 in 1996. John Lennon recorded a version during the Walls and Bridges sessions in 1973 and that version was released on the John Lennon Anthology in 1998. Paul, George and Ringo also performed the song in 1994 while filming the Anthology TV series.
