It has also been recorded by Cab Calloway, Fats Waller and Count Basie. It appeared in the film When Willie Comes Marching Home from 1950. Johnnie Ray recorded his version in 1952 and it was a number six hit in the UK in 1953. He recorded a live version in 1954. John Lennon was a fan of Johnnie Ray and he knew this song. He would sing it as a teenager while playing harmonica. He sings a line of it during an interview with Kenny Everett in 1968.
